Session organized by the project “Antimicrobial Integrated Methodologies for orthopaedic applications – AIMed”
The project AIMed has recognized that there is an urgent need for inter-disciplinary trained researchers with knowledge of effective antimicrobial methodologies. The increase in infections by antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become of great concern in hospitals, especially after orthopedic surgical procedures. The risk of re-infection during revision surgery is far greater than that of primary infection, which is variously estimated to fall around 2%, depending on the type of the prosthetic implant, patient condition, clinical setting and surgical procedure. Recognizing a lack of coordinated activities in this area of research, AIMed will not only train 15 ESRs but also develop novel and effective antimicrobial methodologies for preventing orthopedic infections. The project started in 2020 and this session will provide a possibility to present results achieved including novel antimicrobial functionalization procedures of biomaterials for orthopedic applications.
